Big Bend Motorcycle Tour Complete

We made it back home Saturday evening. All in all, we covered 1100+ miles with approximately 800 of that being the journey to get out there and back. We swam in the San Solomon Springs in Balmorhea, we looked through the 107″ Harlan J. Smith telescope for an intimate view of Saturn and a Binary Star system. We hung out with the local cast of characters in Terlingua and witnessed the opening day of the Bandido’s rally in Alpine. We saw some great country, revisited some of our favorite places, and met some interesting people along the way. You meet the nicest people riding a motorcycle! Continue reading

Big Bend Motorcycle Tour Day 2

Big Bend Run Day 2

We left Georgetown Tuesday morning. As we were walking out the door, Phyllis broke her sunglasses. We had all ready planned to stop and buy a luggage rack bag, as the one I had been using weighs 10lbs with nothing in it. We picked up a nice Harley Bag that weighs about 2lbs empty. Why do we need this? Cause we always take to much stuff.
We were going to ride Hwy 29 to Hwy 377 but I missed the turn on the west side of Mason, so we turned back in Hext and ran a one lane back road to London and on into Junction where we picked up IH10. We did another 200 miles to our hotel in Balmorhea. We had a nice cocktail hour and some dinner and then hit the sack.
Today we got up, had some burritos at the Bal Mor Hea Store and headed to the Balmorhea State Park where we had a swim in the San Solomon Springs.
We rode into Fort Davis for some lunch (more Mexican food, can you believe it?) and now we are at the Astronomers Lodge at the McDonald Observatory for the night. The roads today have been excellent. Lots of elevation changes, sweepers, and hairpins to keep me busy. Phyllis was flashing the camara all the way around.
Tonight we are going to have dinner with an Astronomer and then take a look through the 107″ Telescope. Should be a blast!
