Big Bend Motorcycle Tour Day 2

Big Bend Run Day 2

We left Georgetown Tuesday morning. As we were walking out the door, Phyllis broke her sunglasses. We had all ready planned to stop and buy a luggage rack bag, as the one I had been using weighs 10lbs with nothing in it. We picked up a nice Harley Bag that weighs about 2lbs empty. Why do we need this? Cause we always take to much stuff.
We were going to ride Hwy 29 to Hwy 377 but I missed the turn on the west side of Mason, so we turned back in Hext and ran a one lane back road to London and on into Junction where we picked up IH10. We did another 200 miles to our hotel in Balmorhea. We had a nice cocktail hour and some dinner and then hit the sack.
Today we got up, had some burritos at the Bal Mor Hea Store and headed to the Balmorhea State Park where we had a swim in the San Solomon Springs.
We rode into Fort Davis for some lunch (more Mexican food, can you believe it?) and now we are at the Astronomers Lodge at the McDonald Observatory for the night. The roads today have been excellent. Lots of elevation changes, sweepers, and hairpins to keep me busy. Phyllis was flashing the camara all the way around.
Tonight we are going to have dinner with an Astronomer and then take a look through the 107″ Telescope. Should be a blast!

Getting Ready to Ride. Motorcycle Tour to Big Bend, Texas!

Getting Ready to Ride. Motorcycle Tour to Big Bend, Texas!

We are going to spend a few days on the bike next week. I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time. I’m hopeful that we will be blessed with good weather albeit, Hot. The journey should take us a little over 1200 miles. We will be visiting such exotic places as Balmorhea, Terlingua, Fort Davis, and Alpine. We will also ride the Great Texas River Road. It’s about 60 miles of the most desolate (and memorable) road you will ever see. It follows the Rio Grande from Presidio to Lajitas. We are also going to the McDonald Observatory and get a look through the 107″ Harlan J. Smith Telescope, take a dip in San Solomon Springs, and hang out on the porch at the Terlingua Trading Company with Dr. Doug.

We’ve got our house sitter lined up and we are putting together our list of essentials. We will be leaving soon. I can’t wait!
